Valley Forge — Betzwood paved river return — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-11. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
Ride an approximately four-mile out-and-back on the paved Schuylkill River Trail from Betzwood toward Pawlings Road. The National Park Service describes its two-mile section as paved, with no steep areas. Montgomery County's complete trail map independently lists two miles between the Betzwood picnic area and Pawlings Road trailhead. This is a short, bounded outing within a much longer regional trail.
Start at Betzwood Picnic Area's designated public parking, on the north side of the Schuylkill River. Use the NPS Betzwood driving directions, rather than the main visitor center address on the other bank. The park's directions approach by US 422 West and the first Trooper Road South exit, then turn left at the ramp, left downhill toward the dead end and right into Betzwood. The NPS picnic-area coordinate is a general destination reference, not a surveyed parking stall.
Walk your bicycle out of your parking space and use the park map and signed access to reach the paved Schuylkill River Trail. Follow it upstream toward Pawlings Road, keeping to the paved main route. At the Pawlings Road trailhead, turn around before entering the public road and return the same way. The park map also shows the separate gravel Fatlands Trail nearer the river and the connecting Commissary Trail; those paths are outside this outing. Sullivan's Bridge and the hilly Joseph Plumb Martin Trail on the other bank are also outside it.
The published two-mile distance each way gives an approximate four-mile ride. Your parking-space approach and precise turnaround affect the actual distance. The park describes no steep areas, but a numerical maximum slope and elevation gain have not been independently measured. Expect vehicle interfaces at parking and trailhead access. This return does not require a planned public-road transfer; no exhaustive crossing count or surveyed route file is supplied.
Keep right, slow around other users, announce passing and give walkers and horses room. Montgomery County posts a 15 mph trail limit; follow that or any lower posted limit on this outing. Stay on designated paths, leash pets and remove waste. Carry water. Betzwood has picnic tables and seasonal public restrooms, but current restroom operation and drinking-water availability have not been verified.
Ordinary NPS admission is free, with no entrance pass required. Park grounds hours are 7 AM until thirty minutes after sunset; the county regional trail rules say sunrise to sunset. Plan a daylight ride within both posted schedules. NPS allows e-bikes where ordinary bicycles are legal, with motor power assisting pedaling on nonmotorized paths; throttle-only use is prohibited there. County rules elsewhere have different wording and do not replace the park's rule.
Checked October 11, 2026: NPS trail, accessibility, fees, compendium, Betzwood directions, complete June 2025 park map and all three live park alerts; current county trail profile, complete two-page trail map, parking table and current trail alerts. County Line Road's weekday closure and the Maurice Stephens parking closure are outside this selected north-side return. Fatlands maintenance applies to the separate gravel route and does not establish the condition of this paved trail. Recheck posted access and trail conditions before publication or a visit. Stop before any barrier or active work area and shorten the ride if necessary.
