Bedford, Massachusetts · About 1.8 miles return · Asphalt rail-trail · Ordinary pedal bicycle
Start beside Bedford's historic depot, follow the paved Minuteman southeast into the wooded corridor and turn before Wiggins Avenue. This modest return offers a sample of the bikeway without continuing into Lexington or crossing Wiggins Avenue.
Bedford confirms that cycling is permitted on the asphalt path. A legacy bikeway committee description calls the terrain gently rolling. That is a qualitative description of the corridor, rather than a measured slope profile or a promise of a uniformly flat ride.
Park at Depot Park and walk to the main path
Use the designated public Depot Park parking area off Loomis Street, east of South Road. The town lists Depot Park at 80 Loomis Street, and the park's volunteer operator identifies public parking as part of the complex. August 2025 street imagery shows the Depot Park entrance sign and parking approach on the south side of Loomis Street.
Check the actual parking signs and use a public visitor space. Nearby industrial, commercial and other reserved spaces are not automatically trail parking. The old passenger depot, Freight House, railcar and surrounding businesses have different functions; a building address is a landmark, not permission to occupy every adjoining stall.
Walk your bicycle south through the park and parking area to the main Minuteman path beside the historic passenger depot, near the southeastern edge of the complex. Keep clear of moving vehicles and other visitors. Stay on the public paths rather than crossing the railcar's display tracks or passing through a business.
From this selected parking area you do not need to cross South Road or Loomis Street to reach the main course. The parking walk is extra and unmeasured, and a protected route from every stall has not been established. Ordinary parking charges and formal park operating hours remain unverified. Choose daylight, check the posted terms and do not treat a visitor-center opening schedule as the hours of the entire bikeway.
Follow the Minuteman southeast
From beside the depot, join the main paved Minuteman toward Lexington and Cambridge. Follow its southeast curve past the park and commercial edge, then continue along the straight wooded rail corridor. Stay on the main path at side connections, look for access points and obey every posted stop or crossing control.
Turn before the Wiggins Avenue curb ramp and road crossing. Choose a place where you can stop and reverse direction clear of others; turn earlier if necessary. Do not roll down to the road simply to find an exact distance. This outing does not cross Wiggins Avenue or continue over the Shawsheen River bridge, toward Westview Street or to Hartwell Avenue.
Return by the same main path to the historic depot. Dismount before entering the park's busier visitor area and walk back through the lot to your vehicle. The Narrow-Gauge and Reformatory Branch trails are separate outings with different surfaces, road interfaces and access boundaries.
Distance, surface and shared use
Plan for about 1.8 miles on the main return, plus the parking walk. The reference uses approximately 0.9 mile each way between the depot-side main path and a point short of Wiggins Avenue. It comes from a historical MassDOT inventory line checked against the brochure and public aerial layout. It is not a surveyed stall-to-stall distance or a navigation track.
The town describes the Minuteman as asphalt and twelve feet wide. Widths, pavement defects, access barriers and local transitions have not been physically inspected. The gently rolling description does not establish maximum grade, cross-slope or accessibility. Pavement alone is not an accessibility certificate.
Keep right and give an audible warning before passing on the left. Yield to walkers, allow room for opposing users and stop clear of the riding line when taking a break. The brochure advises a maximum of 15 mph and slower travel when crowded; a comfortable recreational pace will often be lower. Wear a helmet and supervise children closely around the lot, junctions and other riders.
Current conditions and remaining checks
MWRA's June 30, 2026 notice explicitly confirms that the separate Maple Street–Bow Street section in Lexington reopened. The older closure warning still displayed on the bikeway website refers to work that began in November 2025. Other water-main and roadway work continues; reopening that section does not establish that every part of the Minuteman is clear today.
Before publication, freshly check the Bedford lot terms, signed park-to-path connection, main-path surface, access points and Wiggins turnaround. Follow temporary barriers and return early instead of improvising a road or private-property bypass. Restrooms and visitor facilities may be unavailable when you arrive.
