Karen Fraser Woodland Trail — Eastside short return — detailed guide

Source review: 2026-10-12. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.

Take a short paved ride from Olympia’s Eastside Street Trailhead to the approach to Frederick Street, then return the same way. The City’s map labels this first leg 0.86 miles, making the return about 1.7 miles, plus the walked parking approach. Turn around before entering the Frederick Street crossing.

This outing uses the western end of Olympia’s Karen Fraser Woodland Trail. The City describes its main asphalt trail as a 10-foot-wide bicycle and pedestrian route with a gentle slope of 3% or less. That published description supports this short outing; it does not measure the parking approach or provide a climbing total. The parallel crushed-rock path is a separate surface and is not part of this guide. City trail profile

Start and course

Start at the public Eastside Street Trailhead, 1600 Eastside Street SE, at Eastside Street and Wheeler Avenue. The City identifies a parking lot, shelter, restroom and trail information at this main trailhead. Follow the signed public entrance and walk your bicycle from the lot onto the main asphalt trail. Nearby street-side pedestrian and bicycle entrances are not substitute parking lots.

Follow the main paved former railroad trail eastward toward Frederick Street. Stay on the asphalt, leaving the parallel crushed rock, neighborhood paths and park side trails out of the ride. The City’s map shows the first leg curving away from Eastside Street before returning toward Frederick Street.

At the approach to Frederick Street, stop and turn around on the trail in a place where you will not block passing users. Do not cross the street to extend this advertised distance. Retrace the asphalt route to Eastside and walk back through the parking area. You can turn back sooner for a shorter outing. City trail map

The approximate 1.7-mile return doubles the map’s 0.86-mile Eastside-to-Frederick leg. Turning just before the crossing makes the distance slightly shorter than that doubled label. This is a source-based estimate, not a surveyed track. Slow at access points and any driveway or maintenance interface; the map does not document every present-day traffic control.

Suitability and visit planning

The City calls the asphalt trail fully accessible and states a slope of 3% or less. No independent present-day slope survey or total ascent is supplied here. Walk any uncomfortable joint, incline or parking approach. A description of the main trail does not certify every entrance or side path.

Expect pedestrians, runners, bicycles and mobility-device users. Keep right, ride slowly near the trailhead, and announce before passing on the left, as the City’s trail signs encourage. Dogs must be leashed and under their owner’s control; clean up after them. Stay off courts, play areas and surrounding footpaths when using this route. City park rules

Choose daylight and follow posted trailhead and gate hours. The reviewed City profile and park-rules page do not give specific hours for this trailhead. Thurston County’s 9 a.m. opening and Lacey’s 7 a.m. opening govern different facilities and should not be applied here. Overnight parking is prohibited under the City’s general park rules.

An ordinary trailhead parking or entry fee was not expressly confirmed in the reviewed sources. Check signs on arrival. Bring water; the named restroom and shelter are facilities, not a guarantee that services are operating when you visit. No surveyed parking pin or navigation GPX is supplied.

Conditions and review

Reviewed October 12, 2026 UTC, while it was October 11 locally. The City’s current profile supplies the asphalt, grade and public-trailhead descriptions. Its linked map is printed October 2017; the 2022 query timestamp in the download address is not a new map edition or a current barrier inspection.

This short ride ends before Frederick Street. It does not continue to Fones Road, the Chehalis Western Trail, the I-5 corridor or Lacey’s separate Woodland Trail section. Olympia’s current Fones Road project page retains a fall 2026 completion forecast, pedestrian and bicycle detours, and a planned enhanced trail crossing. That forecast does not establish that the crossing work has finished. Current Fones Road project

No dated inspection or unconditional all-clear for the selected western segment was found in the reviewed sources. Check current signs, gates, weather, debris and repairs before starting. Return early or postpone if passage is blocked or unsuitable; do not substitute a street detour for this short trail outing.

Editorial draft complete with these qualifications. Fresh launch checks and integration into Joy Riders USA remain pending.
