Haugen Drive Bike Path — Sandy Beach Park return — detailed guide

Source review: 2026-10-22. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.

A short selection of Petersburg’s established separated paved bicycle path, using a public park start.

Start and parking

Start: Sandy Beach Park public visitor parking, Sandy Beach Road at Haugen Drive, Petersburg, AK.

The borough’s current recreation facility listing identifies Sandy Beach Park’s public parking lot and shows the shelter open. Use ordinary visitor spaces under posted terms and walk to the road-side bicycle path. A shelter reservation does not reserve the whole park or authorize parking in restricted spaces.

Ride and distance

Selected ride: Up to 2 miles return. Format: Out and back.

Surface and effort

Paved asphalt bicycle sidepath; City Creek natural trail and Sandy Beach Road shoulder excluded. Roadside developed path with local rises, driveway and junction transitions. No measured maximum slope or all-flat claim.

Crossings and shared use

Expect driveways and marked street crossings. Stop and yield; do not replace a missing sidepath connection with road riding. Yield to pedestrians, keep right, and slow at blind corners. Stop at barriers; never use a traffic-road detour to bypass a trail closure.

Hours, costs and access

Choose daylight and obey posted park and path hours; snow and ice affect access. Shelter rental is separate from ordinary trail use. Follow current visitor-parking terms; no blanket free-parking claim.

Reviewed 2026-10-22. Primary transportation inventory identifies an existing 1.3-mile paved Haugen Drive bicycle path from 8th Street to Sandy Beach Park, distinct from proposed Sandy Beach Road work. May 28 water-repair notice was a dated event, not proof of an October closure or a reopening. Current park listing supports the public start; check path work, ice and barriers before travel. This is a source review, not a same-day inspection. Recheck the linked manager before travel.

Map and Directions

Use the named public start and its posted parking signs. The map reference identifies the facility or selected trail area; it is not a surveyed parking stall or navigable route line. Bicycle and e-bike rules can differ; only ordinary bicycle use is established unless noted.
