Paved; concrete and asphalt
Road crossings
watch for golf-cart and maintenance traffic where access paths meet the greenway. A local observer describes one golf-cart path passing underneath and another meeting the trail at grade. Yield at those interfaces, slow on bridges and give walkers room. This is not a claim that vehicles can never cross the route.
Elevation
paved greenways, with concrete and asphalt on Flint River. Expect a few short bridge inclines rather than a surveyed flat grade throughout. The university's easy-ride description and the separate Flint River profile support a recreational outing; published computer-generated zero-percent slope figures are not treated as precise measurements. Water, mud or debris after rain can make a normally comfortable path unsuitable.

approximately 7 miles out and back, not a seven-mile loop. The published group outing follows Big Cove Creek to Hays and then Flint River Greenway to Southeast Old Highway 431, about 3.5 miles each way. This does not use every mile of Big Cove Creek Greenway or all ten-plus miles of preserve trails. Your parking connection adds a little distance.

Combine two connected greenways for a longer, mostly separated ride through Hays Nature Preserve. The University of Alabama in Huntsville's February 2026 biking-group newsletter describes this outing as an easy, relatively flat paved route, about seven miles round trip. The main attraction is the creek and river scenery, with a shaded approach and bridges over the Flint River.

Distance: approximately 7 miles out and back, not a seven-mile loop.

Start: the designated Big Cove Creek Greenway lot just off Old Highway 431, near Hampton Cove Elementary School. The city identifies public greenway parking on Old Highway 431; the independent local guide links this small trail lot. Use that designated lot rather than assuming school or shopping-center parking is available.

Course: take the signed Big Cove Creek Greenway south toward Hays Nature Preserve. Follow the separated path and bridge-side connection, not the highway traffic lanes. The city and local descriptions show a highway underpass on the way into Hays; use it only when open and dry. Continue to the paved river parking area where Big Cove Creek and Flint River greenways meet. Take Flint River Greenway, follow its pavement and river bridges, and turn around at its Old Highway 431 parking trailhead, before joining the street. Retrace both greenways to your starting lot.

The two Old Highway 431 trailheads are different places. Do not join them by riding on the road to make a loop. Also distinguish Flint River Greenway from the preserve's natural-surface Flint Trail. On the manager's preserve map, the greenways are orange and hiking trails red; the horse trails and nature paths are not shortcuts for this ride.

Shorter option: start at the Hays river lot at the Big Cove/Flint junction and ride only Flint River Greenway to its Old Highway 431 end and back. The city lists that greenway as 1.87 miles one way, giving approximately 3.7 miles return. Enter Hays at 7153 Highway 431 South, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763, then follow preserve signs to designated river parking, not the horse-trailer spaces. The linked city map marks the river lot beside the orienteering starting area.

Surface and effort: paved greenways, with concrete and asphalt on Flint River.

Traffic and sharing: watch for golf-cart and maintenance traffic where access paths meet the greenway. A local observer describes one golf-cart path passing underneath and another meeting the trail at grade. Yield at those interfaces, slow on bridges and give walkers room. This is not a claim that vehicles can never cross the route.

Hours and cost: Hays is open sunrise to sunset unless posted otherwise, and may close for flooding. Plan the whole outing within those hours. The independent guide describes free trailhead parking; the reviewed manager pages do not specify a greenway admission charge. Posted terms govern. Bring water; the preserve lists restrooms but their opening is not guaranteed.

Rules and access check: the city explicitly lists biking at Hays. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on its sidewalks, trails and greenways, and dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet. E-bike class eligibility is not established by that general rule. City profiles, preserve rules and linked maps were reviewed October 19, 2026; no selected-course closure notice appeared in those reviewed pages. That is a dated desktop check, not a flood or bridge inspection. The current links still serve older 2012/2016 map artwork, useful for orientation rather than present-day navigation.
