Bethel Creek short gravel loop — detailed guide

Follow the small creek and the edge of working farmland at the foot of Keel Mountain. This short ride uses the improved loop near the entrance to Bethel Spring Nature Preserve, with the steep waterfall hike left for another visit on foot.
Distance: about 0.3 mile for one lap, plus the short walking approach from your parking space. The current owner rounds the loop to 0.3 mile; its July 2020 map lists 0.33 mile. These describe the same short loop rather than two routes to add together. If a bridge, muddy patch or posted restriction interrupts the circuit, retrace for a shorter outing.
Start: use the preserve's designated public trailhead parking at 2641 Cherry Tree Road, Gurley, Alabama. The owner specifically prohibits parking on the road or in the neighboring church lot. Walk from your marked space to the trail kiosk and the signed Bethel Creek Loop. If the preserve lot is full, choose another time; the rules close the preserve to additional visitors once parking fills. No roadside alternative or exact parking-stall coordinate is supplied.
Course: follow only the signed Bethel Creek Loop, which stays near the entrance beside the creek and farmland before returning to the trailhead. The owner's map colors it red. Stay on the marked path and inside preserve boundaries; do not ride across agricultural ground. Walk the parking interface and any bridge or narrow approach where riding would crowd others or conflict with signs. There is no Cherry Tree Road crossing or road riding in this outing. Leave Spring Trail, Carpenter Trail, Mill Trail and Falling Sink Trail out of the ride; do not follow the uphill waterfall route simply because it branches from the entrance area.
Surface and effort: the owner describes a crushed-gravel loop and an easy stroll usable by visitors with varying mobility. This supports a gentle short outing, with possible loose stone, wet patches and uncomfortable approaches. It is a qualitative description, not a measured maximum slope or an accessibility certification for a bicycle. Turn back or walk if the current surface is unsuitable.
Bicycle rules: the Land Trust's current published rules explicitly make its marked trails available for hiking and biking. The older map's activity icons show hiking and picnicking, without an explicit bicycle prohibition; the current written rules provide the bicycle basis for this draft. Follow any more specific signs at the site. Motorized vehicles are prohibited; this guide makes no additional e-bike eligibility finding. Yield to people on foot and use a slow pace on this short shared loop.
Hours, cost and weather: the owner describes free public trails open dawn to dusk. Stay off wet trails and wait at least 24 hours after rainfall, as the Land Trust requires; wait longer if the tread remains muddy. Membership and guided-event registration are separate from an ordinary visit. Caves are not part of the outing, and the preserve's roughly two-mile hiking system is not this ride's distance.
Access check: sources reviewed October 20, 2026. An April trail-care notice concerns Carpenter Trail farther from the entrance, and a September foraging hike was canceled for a rain forecast. Neither establishes an ongoing closure of this selected loop. No newer loop-specific closure was established in the bounded review. Current gates, signs, creek conditions and bridges were not field-inspected; postpone if access is closed or wet. The linked 2020 map is an approximate orientation aid, not a surveyed navigation route.
