Bessemer Rail Trail — elevated railway return
Alabama · Rail-trail
Use the designated Berkley Avenue approach to the existing elevated paved rail-trail. Ride the open main trail in either direction and retrace. A complete end-to-end return is about 0.9–1.2 miles; an interior start or earlier turnaround shortens it. Do not use a road detour or assume the Highway 150 recreation-center bridge is open.

A short paved rail-trail on an elevated former railway provides a distinct Bessemer outing.
Start and parking
Start: Bessemer Rail Trail Berkley Avenue access, 1412 Berkley Avenue, Bessemer, AL 35020.
The regional partner identifies lawful street parking near the Berkley Avenue trailhead. Check current parking signs, use only permitted public spaces, and walk the approach ramp. Do not cross Highway 150 from the recreation center or use a private lot. If no lawful space is available, choose another start or ride.

Reviewed 2026-10-22. Current partner GIS and volunteer listings identify the existing rail-trail. Published lengths differ between about 0.43 and 0.6 mile; this is retained as a range rather than false precision. The city lists the recreation center at 100 14th Street South, unlike the regional address range. This outing therefore uses the independently listed Berkley Avenue trail-side entrance and does not rely on the recreation-center bridge. This is a source review, not a same-day inspection. Recheck the linked manager before travel.
Map and Directions
Use the named public start and its posted parking signs. The map reference identifies the facility or selected trail area; it is not a surveyed parking stall or navigable route line. Bicycle and e-bike rules can differ; only ordinary bicycle use is established unless noted.
