A short ride on Durham's paved rail trail, with a park stop at each end of the outing. Walk from C.M. Herndon Park to the main trail, ride north to the 9.5-mile marker, then retrace your route. Start at C.M. Herndon Park, 511 Scott King Road, Durham, NC 27713. Use the park's designated visitor parking under its posted terms. Walk your bicycle through the park and along the connection to the American Tobacco Trail. This guide uses the park connection north of Scott King Road; it does not start at the separate trail parking area beside the road. If signs or work barriers prevent access to the park connection, postpone this outing rather than parking on the road or improvising a crossing.
Why this ride fits
Durham Parks and Recreation describes its American Tobacco Trail section as a ten-foot-wide paved route for cyclists, walkers and other trail users. Discover Durham, the tourism office, describes the rail trail as flat and shaded. That supports a generally gentle riding choice for an ordinary comfortable bicycle. It does not establish a measured maximum slope, guarantee today's pavement condition or certify the approach from every parking space as accessible.
The short return keeps you on one section of the main trail. You can turn earlier whenever you have had enough; there is no need to finish a loop or cross Scott King Road to get back to the park. Share the path patiently with walkers, runners and children. Keep your speed below 10 mph, as the Durham trail profile requests, and slow further when passing.
From the park to the trail
Herndon Park's current municipal page lists greenway access, trails, restrooms and a water fountain, with hours from dawn to dusk. The conservancy's July 2011 account documents an eight-foot-wide concrete walkway from the trail toward the park building. It says the walkway had been completed and was already in use, approximately 600 feet north of Scott King Road on the west side of the American Tobacco Trail.
That historical description establishes the connection's role; it is not a recent inspection of the park entrance, path or drainage. Follow current park and trail signs to identify it, and walk the approach. The parking-to-trail distance and current stall layout have not been independently measured. Allow time for the approach, and watch for vehicles inside the park.
At the main trail, turn north, toward Durham. Keep Scott King Road behind you. If you reach the road before joining the intended northbound course, stop and review the park's signs rather than treating that road crossing as part of this ride.
The northbound ride and return
Follow the main paved American Tobacco Trail toward the 9.5-mile marker. The municipal address maps and conservancy map place this stretch between the Scott King area and the 9.5-mile point, with no intervening road crossing depicted on the selected stretch. The park connection is described approximately 600 feet north of Scott King Road, near the trail's 10.2-mile area. Riding from there to 9.5 and back gives roughly 1.4–1.5 miles, before the park approach.
The marker is your turnaround reference, not a request to make a sudden turn across other users. Stop where there is clear space, check both directions, and turn without blocking the path. Return south along the same paved trail, then take the same connection back to the park. Stop before Scott King Road if you miss that connection; this outing does not include crossing the road or continuing south into the next jurisdiction.
These are source-map directions, not a GPX route or surveyed coordinates. The municipal address-map set dates to 2016 and the conservancy color map to February 2019. Confirm the current marker and connection signs before setting off. If either reference is missing or unclear, make an earlier return.
Hours, services and current work
Plan this outing within Herndon Park's dawn-to-dusk hours. General advice about other Durham trails closing at dusk or 10 p.m. does not extend this park's hours. Durham says its multi-use trails are free; that does not guarantee every parking arrangement is free or override posted park terms. This guide does not apply field, shelter or equipment rental fees to an ordinary trail ride.
Restrooms and water are listed at Herndon Park, but their operation can change with maintenance and the season. Bring drinking water and treat the park facilities as a possible convenience. Durham's construction page lists renovation of Herndon's ballfields with an October 5 reopening forecast. That is not confirmation that the work is finished, and it does not by itself close the American Tobacco Trail. Check the park entrance and any work-zone signs on arrival.
The October 12 notice review also found upcoming repairs to Solite Park's access path, much farther north, and separate closures on South Ellerbee Creek. Those notices do not describe a closure of this selected Herndon stretch. Their absence here is not an inspection or an assurance that today's trail is clear. Turn back for flooding, debris, broken pavement, a barrier or any condition that makes the ride uncomfortable; do not adopt a street detour.

This is an editorial guide with qualifications, not launch-approved. Preserve the approximate riding distance and the distinction between historical maps, the current park page and an actual arrival check.
