Juneau, Alaska · Up to 2 miles return · Compacted aggregate main trail; inspect for loose or eroded spots
Start: Airport Dike Trail / EVAR, Public Airport Dike Trail parking at end of Radcliffe Road, Juneau, AK. Use the dedicated trail entrance lot, not airport terminal parking. Walk the entrance bridge and yield at the service gate. Use designated ordinary visitor spaces, respect reserved spaces and walk through the lot to the signed main path. The address identifies a public facility, not a surveyed stall.
Ride: Follow the signed main path along the main Airport Dike Trail toward the covered bench. Turn after 1 outward mile or before the first public-road crossing, work barrier, uncertain continuation or uncomfortable transition, whichever comes first; retrace. Walk any initial lot or access-drive interface. Do not use a road or private-property detour.
Distance: Chosen 2-mile maximum return, not the full regional corridor or a surveyed parking-to-parking distance. Earlier interfaces shorten the outing; parking walking is extra.
Permission and effort: Airport explicitly allows ordinary bicyclists on the public EVAR. This is an emergency/service access road with occasional authorized vehicles, not a guarantee of vehicle-free travel. Airport operator explicitly describes gentle grade. This short return avoids natural wetlands spurs; no measured maximum slope supplied.
Planning: Choose daylight and obey posted gate / parking hours. No current ordinary access tariff established; posted terms govern. Event, camping and rental charges are separate. Always yield immediately to airport and emergency vehicles. Do not feed wildlife or leave food / trash. Keep clear of wildlife control, runway fencing and natural footpaths. Walk entrance bridge if crowded.
Access reviewed October 20, 2026 Central (October 21 UTC): Airport homepage currently says EVAR open. Firsthand August 2025 reopening report documents bank stabilization and newly compacted tread; this is historical work evidence, not proof of present surface condition. Tourism calls the trail paved, whereas owner master-plan search text describes gravel and reopening reporting confirms compaction; plan for aggregate, not guaranteed pavement. Airport emergency vehicles have priority and may appear at any time. Wildlife-control activity can occur year round; obey any maintenance/safety closure. This is a dated source review, not a field inspection or current-day all-clear. Postpone for snow, ice, high water, soft tread or barriers rather than improvising a bypass.
Bring water and choose suitable weather. Parking walking is extra. No surveyed parking-space pin or navigable GPX is supplied.
